Meteoric Makeover Volunteers Appeal – 16th & 17th May

MIB09_AM_BSM_BEFORE_005.jpgWhile a planning application for this former car showroom site is currently under consideration, any future development is uncertain until planning permission is granted. It may therefore be some time before any work starts at this site. Having already laid empty for over a year, the grass and weeds have grown and the frontage now sports a look which is at best forlorn and at worst an eyesore. And that look is ‘so last season’.

Fortunately the site developers (Exmax Moseley) agree, and have given permission for the raised bed and perimeter fencing to be planted up with a dense tropical screen of green foliage and summer flowering annuals and climbers. They have also offered much-needed sponsorship to fund the project, making them a Moseley in Bloom ‘Platinum Sponsor’.

Our local horticultural supporters from the aptly named Four Seasons Nursery have been lovingly nurturing seedlings under glass, ready for planting in a few weeks’ time, when the risk of late frosts should have passed. The nursery is a social enterprise run by Birmingham City Council Services for Adults with Learning Disabilities, based at Chamberlain House Training Centre on Yew Tree Road, where they grow herbaceous and summer bedding plants, herbs and vegetables for sale to the public. Their previous involvement has included planting up a three-tier display planter on Victoria Parade as well as the planters at St Mary’s Church.

If you’re worried about empty shops and businesses being boarded up and disused sites lying idle then consider helping to transform this derelict forecourt into an unexpected urban garden and make your village really bloom this summer. Volunteers are also needed to help with spring planting outside the park entrance too.

Volunteer a little time during the weekend of 16th/17th May and you can help make a difference. Everyone welcome.
